A shortage of glass bottles is feared due to the war in Ukraine. Supplying raw materials is becoming more difficult and prices are soaring.
The glass industry is under strain. Glass is starting to run short for bottles, and it is becoming increasingly expensive for vials, as in the pharmaceutical industry. At Château Roubine, a wine estate in the Var, the rosé season has begun, a key moment for a successful year. But the bottles currently being used are not the usual ones: here, cellar master Loïc Botcazou has had to source others. He even fears a shortage.
France, the world’s second-largest importer of glass containers
"We may fear one, particularly for rosés, because it is a very specific production. We know that rosé must mostly be put in clear bottles, because that is part of the quality of rosé: we want to see that beautiful pale colour", explains Loïc Botcazou, cellar master at Château Roubine. France is the world’s second-largest importer of glass containers. It buys them from Germany, Italy, Poland and also Ukraine, where at least two plants have been shut down by the war. Another difficulty for the industry is soaring energy prices. At SGD Pharma, a company that manufactures one billion vials a year for the pharmaceutical industry, the energy bill has reached record highs.
